I was recently given the opportunity to try out a wildcrafted apothecary dental line as well as some oils which couldn’t have come at a better time. I had already been thinking about making the switch to a more holistic toothpaste for awhile and when I found Well Scent‘s product line up, I thought it would be the perfect place to start.
Shine (in combination with Watch Your Mouth, or just the WYM) is the toothpaste replacement. Just a couple drops of the organic oil, and then a dip into the Shine is just enough for a brushing. The oil is made from Peppermint and Neem Oil which are both great for dental care. We use peppermint and tea tree all the time around the house as an anti-bacterial and peppermint works just the same when taking care of those pearly whites! It’s an anti-fungal, antiviral, and it smells yummy too. Neem Oil has been studied and known to reduce plaque and even help in cases of gingivitis. The Shine is a baking soda mixture, which I had just started to research before discovering Well Scent. It neutralizes the acids in your mouth which reduces cavities. With all ingredients being organic, I feel much better using these to brush my teeth than anything else. I noticed a difference almost immediately, my teeth feeling much cleaner than they typically do after a brushing with my regular toothpaste. I have just noticed that they have a kid’s version too which I would love to try out for Odin!
The other bit of the dental line that I tried was the Sparkle, a tooth whitener. This one’s main ingredient was another one I was eager to explore a bit more, even before discovering this line – activated charcoal. I hadn’t thought much about it until it arrived and I eagerly opened up the jar (there were tiny black specks all over the bathroom and myself!). I love that in it’s description the lovely folks over at Well-Scent tell you to be prepared, It’s messy! They aren’t lying at all. I love that it is a powerful mixture and very effective too. Ridiculously fun to brush with because it makes your whole mouth black and then you can spend the two minutes brushing chasing the boys you love most all around the house making zombie noises!
In addition to the oh so fun activated charcoal is Myrrh. Before this, I didn’t know much about the plant, but apparently it has been used for healing for thousands of years. Super effective for sore throats and mouth/gum infections. Sparkle also contains a wide range of other great ingredients, all proven to greatly increase dental health. If you plan to whiten your teeth, I highly recommend traveling this route instead of a chemical laden one.
I also tried out some essential oil blends. We have standard oils in the house, but only a few blends of oils. My family has a very long history of anxiety and I was very eager to try “Smile” which is a mood stabilizer. The ingredients in this one really resonate with me. The Jasmine, Sandalwood, and Geranium especially! Quite often I deal with very small bouts of anxiety (I’m fairly good at calming myself down these days), and using a blend of ingredients known to help ground and strengthen has really helped.
I have not really been able to use Protect too much thankfully, it is a flu and cold support. That could partially be due to the fact that we use it occasionally as a preventative. We will definitely be using it as the season changes and colds run rampant though. This one contains another wonderful variety of organic herbs known to help with sickness like Hyssop, Frankincense, and Vetiver.
I am loving learning more about herbal treatments for every day ailments or personal care routines, and this has been a wonderful experience for me. I’ve loved researching the ingredients and knowing where EXACTLY they come form, rather than only having a vague idea of what I am putting into my system. It’s important to know what we are using on ourselves and what we are using on our children, and how using those ingredients is affecting our environment.
Please check out Well Scent to learn more about their apothecary line and please consider giving some of their products a try. I was beyond impressed with the dental line and will definitely be ordering more when we run out!
